Broadband over Power Lines
In October 2004 the
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) commissioners unanimously approved
rules for Broadband over Power Line (BPL) technology. FCC Chairman
Michael Powell indicated that the ubiquity of the U.S. electrical grid
means BPL is an ideal platform for affordable, universal broadband service
in the US. Mr. Powell said that BPL offers network-based competition for
DSL and cable-modem service; and provides a basis for an intelligent,
modernized Electrical Power Grid in the
US.
This new and
potentially breakthrough approach to broadband access and data networks is
replete with unknowns and evolving technical, legislative, competitive and
operational considerations. KOHL addresses these issues enabling our
clients to formulate, test and implement BPL initiatives
intelligently and effectively, both for broadband for their constituents
and for improving their own diagnostic, control and reporting mechanisms
throughout their power systems.
The KOHL staff
has directed and performed some of the most thorough evaluations of the
BPL to date, including recent hands-on experience, field-testing a variety
of competing BPL products and evaluating power systems for BPL. Our
experience addresses the unique and fluid issues
of BPL system design, implementation,
network integration and operations. KOHL experts provide in-depth
expertise in business strategy and
operations of competing technologies and networks, such as cable-modem,
xDSL, Fiber-to-the-X, WiMAX and
other Wireless alternatives. This combination of practical, technical and
business grounding enables us to provide a uniquely balanced and
insightful approach for the utilization of BPL.
It is rare to find the combination of
extensive hands on, field experience coupled with the most sophisticated
technical, fiscal and business oriented knowledge in the industry.
